Podcast Episode 130 - Don’t make it a good day–make it a great day
/Ever had a good day turn into a bad day?
Have you ever planned a special day and missed out on all the fun because of your bad mood?
When you plan something that matters, and you’re excited about it beforehand, but when the day comes, are you expecting the worst, the other shoes going to drop or are you expecting it to be a great day?
I’m talking about how to turn a good day into a great one. Let’s be honest; most of us have had good days turn into bad days.
So today is for you if:
If you want to enjoy your day, especially those special days you plan, instead of your mood ruining it.
If you desire to take a good day to a great day and not a good day to a bad day.
If you’re ready for life to work for you instead of feeling like it’s against you.
Yesterday we had a date day planned. It had been two months since our last one, so we were really looking forward to this special day.
When I was about to get ready, I realized my mood was sinking lower and lower. The funny thing is I woke up that morning thinking, “what if something happens to ruin the day.”
If I let my sour mood continue…that sure would ruin the day.
I had a choice at that moment. I could choose to continue down the mulligrubs trail, or I could shift my mood.
This leads me to the first way you can turn a good day into a great one.
1. You are in control of you
Yes, you are in control of yourself…that includes your mood.
How, you ask?
Our mind–our thoughts–controls our brain, and our brain controls our body.
We can use this to our advantage.
Dr. Caroline Leaf, a neuroscientist, says, “You Think > You Feel > You Choose.”
I choose to shift my mood by shifting my thoughts. I put on some music, a happy trigger for me, and shifted my thoughts to what the day would hold.
That changed everything, and my sullen mood lifted.
2. Pre-prep your mindset
Not everything goes right, and crap does happen. But there’s something we can do to prepare to keep our day great.
One of the best ways to help you choose the right thoughts so you can enjoy your day to the fullest is to predetermine what could go wrong and how you will handle it if it does.
Ask: What could trip me up today?
Then ask: How would my best self deal with that?
I had asked myself those questions the morning of my date day so I knew what to do “in case of emergency.” Just like I knew what to do in a fire or earthquake because of all those drills in school. I grew up in California, so we had earthquake drills, too…not that hiding under my desk with my hands across my neck would help…LOL.
3. Expect a great day
Sometimes we’re afraid to look forward to something because we assume something will go wrong. If I don’t get excited, then I won’t get disappointed.
But you’re starting out disappointed!
You’re afraid of what MIGHT happen. But it might NOT.
My girls and I will say to each other daily as they head off to the school bus, “don’t have a good day…have a great day.”
Allow yourself to expect a great day.
So many great things happen, but we forget they do. We focus on the crap instead of all the great stuff that does happen.
Focusing on all the great that happens in the past helps you remember to expect a great day.
4. Roll with the punches
Yes, stuff will happen. But choose to roll the punches and believe for good to come out of it.
Romans 8:28 KJV
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Roll with the punches and believe God good is going to come out of it.
You can turn a good day into a great day instead of letting a good day turn into a bad day.
