Podcast Episode 134 - The secret ingredient to handling the challenges of the season with grace

Are you already tired of the holidays, and they’re just getting started?

Do you feel like the challenges of the season are overwhelming, and you don’t have any juice left to handle them with grace?

Are you a parent, and your patience has already waned, and the school break is only a day or two in?

Let’s face it; holidays are challenging shopping, cleaning, cooking, baking, kids running around hyped up on sugar, money flying out the window, regular bills still coming in strong and people…lots and lots of people.

It all can feel overwhelming, challenging and downright tiring.

Today is defiantly for you if:

  • If you take care of everyone else, but you’re last on your list.

  • If you’re struggling through challenges and setbacks of this season or life and need some help.

  • If you’re ready to relax and recharge so you can become more resilient when difficulties come your way.

In today’s podcast episode, I’m giving you a secret ingredient to help you handle all the challenges and handle them with grace.

Have you ever noticed when we’re tired, we don’t always respond as our best selves? It can compound over the holidays as they can be hard on us all, but hopefully, there’s some joy in there too.

Overwhelm may look different for each of us.

  • Irritation

  • Yelling

  • Sighing

  • Crying

  • Taking it out on the kids, the dog, etc.

The secret ingredient to handling the challenges of the season and life is:

Self-Care

Self-care recharges your batteries and allows you to handle life with more grace.

If you’re exhausted, you’re depleted of what you need to respond correctly.

Remember how the flight attendant always reminds us in case of an emergency to put on our oxygen masks first before the kids?

That’s what you do when you take care of yourself…first.

Here are three ways you can re-juice or recharge:

1. Rest

Yes, rest. Get enough sleep. You can’t burn the candle at both ends and think you will be at your best.

Our bodies heal and recharge when we’re sleeping. But your body can’t fix itself if you don’t get enough sleep, and you won’t have the mental capacity to handle issues that crop up.

2. Eat well or eat in moderation

I know it’s the holidays! I’m a foodie; I get it. So I’m not saying, “don’t enjoy the fruits of the season.” I’m saying, “eat them in moderation.”

If you usually eat five cookies, try eating two instead. You still enjoy the cookies, but they give your stomach a bit of a reprieve.

Have you ever eaten so much you felt horrible?! Yay, me too.

I remind myself of that yucky feeling to help me make better food (or portion choices).

3. Do something for you

Recharge yourself with something you love to do, such as:

  • Bubble bath

  • Read

  • Sit and relax while doing nothing

  • Walk the dog

  • Take a 1-minute breathing/meditation break

Do whatever you enjoy, but make sure it’s for you and is relaxing or recharging.

This is especially for you if you take care of everyone else and you’re last on your list. Or maybe you never even make it on the list.

You’ll have more to give if you take care of yourself first and will be able to handle the challenges with grace.

If you’re enjoying this show, can you do me a favor and share it with someone…that can be my gift from you. And, it will be a gift to your friend, too, so they can be all God’s called them to be.

You got this, and Father’s got you!

Thanks a bunch for listening!
