Roar Back – Reclaim Your Voice

As a kid, I was always told I was “too loud.”

I didn’t need a megaphone—just excitement.

My volume went up when I was passionate.

But the message I received over and over was: tone it down, hush it up, don’t be so much.

It stuck.

Not just in school (hello, detentions for talking), but even later—in work environments, in meetings, even in relationships.

Somewhere along the way, I made an internal vow: “I’ll just stay quiet to keep the peace.”

I believed the lie that silence was safety.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

Silence isn’t safety—it’s fear wearing a Jesus mask.

Lesson 1: Silence Isn’t Safety

Many of us were taught—directly or indirectly—that being quiet was godly, especially as women. We were expected to be humble, gentle, not rock the boat. And while humility is a beautiful strength, silence rooted in fear is not.

I spent decades biting my tongue and shrinking my voice in business meetings, relationships, and even my first marriage. When I did speak, it felt like a beach ball that had been shoved underwater—only to explode out when I couldn’t hold it down any longer.

But here’s the truth:

You already have permission to speak.

If God gave you breath, He gave you sound. You don’t need someone else to validate your voice.

Look at Esther. When the Jewish people were threatened with annihilation, she had to make a decision—stay silent or speak up.

Mordecai reminded her that she may have been placed in the palace “for such a time as this.”

And when she spoke, she didn’t just save herself—she saved others who didn’t have a voice.

Your voice could be the key to someone else’s breakthrough.

Dr. Thema Bryant says, “Reclaiming your voice is part of healing.”
And I believe that with my whole heart.

Lesson 2: Words Create Worlds

The world was spoken into existence. God said, “Let there be light,” and there was.
You and I were made in His image—with the ability to create through our words.

Faith isn’t just felt—it’s spoken. Say it to see it.

Your words matter. They shape how you see yourself, how you feel, and how you show up.

Science backs this up too. Dr. Caroline Leaf teaches that speaking positively and aligning our words with truth literally rewires our brains (hello, neuroplasticity). Our self-talk builds our confidence—or chips away at it.

I’ve had to catch myself mid-sentence and course-correct:

Instead of “Ugh, I messed up again…”

I now say, “Okay Heather, that’s a learning moment. Let’s try again.”

You may not believe the new words at first, but the more you speak them, the more they become part of your reality.

Lesson 3: Practice Your Power

If your voice has been quiet for a while, it’s going to feel weird to use it.
But confidence doesn’t come before action—it comes because of action.

Your voice is like a muscle. The more you use it, the more it grows.

Luke 16:10 reminds us, “Whoever is faithful in little, will be faithful in much.”

Start small. Speak up about what you want for dinner. Share your real thoughts in a low-stakes conversation. Post what you actually want to say on social media. Tell your husband you want a walk. Ask your friend for help. Say what you mean.

When I launched this podcast, I wasn’t doing it for an audience—I did it to practice using my voice. And friend, I’m still practicing. Every single day.

Courageous Action

Here’s what I want you to do this week:

🪞 Mirror Work:

Look at yourself and say, “My voice matters. I was created to speak life, truth, and freedom.”

📝 Journal Prompt:

Ask God: What’s keeping me silent?
Let Holy Spirit show you the root so you can pull it out with love and grace.

🗣 Speak It Boldly:

Say something out loud that you’ve been holding back. Doesn’t have to be huge—but it does have to be true.

You Got This, My Friend

You’re not too loud. You’re not too much.
Your voice is needed—by you, by the people you’re called to, and by the God who created you.

It’s time to roar back.

Show Notes

Summary

Have you ever felt like your voice didn’t matter, so you stayed quiet—even when everything in you wanted to speak? Me too. For years, I shoved my voice down because I believed I was “too much.” In this episode, I’m getting real about why I stayed silent for so long, how I’m reclaiming my voice, and how you can too. We’ll walk through three practical lessons to help you remember that your voice isn’t just important—it’s powerful. You’re not too loud. You’re right on time.

Takeaways

  • Your voice isn’t too much—it’s powerful, and it’s time to use it.

  • Silence might feel safe, but it’s really fear in disguise.

  • You don’t need permission to speak—you already have it.

  • Your voice could be the key to someone else’s breakthrough.

  • Words create worlds. Speak what you want to see.

  • Self-talk isn’t just mental—it shapes your identity and emotions.

  • Speak life over yourself, your family, and your business.

  • Confidence doesn’t come first—it comes from using your voice.

  • Start small. Say what you really want—yes, even about dinner.

  • Reclaiming your voice is part of healing, not just growth.

  • Don’t wait for the perfect moment—open your mouth and speak.

  • Even bold women need to practice their power every day (me included).
