What to Do When Your Soul Feels Dry
Our bodies have built-in alarms to let us know when we’re running low. Hungry stomachs growl. Heavy eyelids remind us we need sleep. Even our cars give us that little glowing gas light as a warning.
But our soul? She isn’t always so obvious. More often than not, we don’t realize she’s running on fumes until we’re already bone-dry.
I know what it’s like to show up for family, for business, even for ministry while feeling empty on the inside.
Here’s what I’ve learned: you cannot fight the storm when your soul has nothing left to give.
Scripture calls it abiding in the vine — staying connected to Jesus in such a way that His life actually replenishes yours. That connection is where strength comes from. And when we’re abiding, we don’t just survive the storm. We have what we need to respond with peace instead of reacting out of fear.
Here are three ways you can refill when the storm drains you dry.
1. Make Space for Stillness
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”
The Hebrew word for “still” carries the idea of letting go, of sinking into rest the way you might drop into a big comfortable chair at the end of a long day. Stillness isn’t wasted time; it’s the space where your soul exhales and becomes aware of His presence again.
For me, that often looks like using a simple Pause app (click here to get the app) while I stretch in the morning or evening. Just sixty seconds of handing things over to Father and letting His peace settle my heart makes all the difference.
Even one quiet minute can shift my mind from panic mode into rest mode. And more importantly, stillness reminds me that I am not alone in the storm.
2. Stay Rooted in His Word
Quick devotionals are wonderful, but they are like snacks. They give you a little something to hold you over, but they aren’t enough to fuel you through a whole day. Abiding goes deeper.
Jesus told His disciples in John 15:7, “If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
Remaining in His Word means more than skimming a verse and moving on. It means slowing down and listening until truth sinks deep enough to persuade your heart.
When we study for understanding instead of simply checking off a box, His Word begins to reshape our responses.
We stop scrambling when storms hit, because truth has already taken root in us. Holy Spirit can bring back to remembrance what has been planted. And in the moment we need it most, His Word steadies us.
3. Live in Constant Conversation
1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “pray without ceasing.”
For years I wondered how in the world that was even possible.
But prayer doesn’t have to look like folded hands and bowed heads. It looks like inviting Father into the everyday moments. It’s whispering a thank you when He brings something to mind. It’s asking Him for wisdom with a client or clarity for a decision. It’s laughing with Him over something silly that only the two of you would get.
Prayer is conversation. It’s coffee with your best friend.
And when we treat it that way, prayer becomes a natural rhythm of our day. This ongoing connection keeps us anchored to the Vine so that no matter what storm rolls through, we remain steady in Him.
Courageous Action
Take a few minutes to reflect on these three questions:
Where are you feeling most drained right now — spiritually, emotionally, or mentally?
When was the last time you felt deeply connected to Father?
What is one truth from Scripture that you’ve read before but haven’t yet let persuade your heart?
Now try this simple study practice I call the RSA Method:
Read for context. Take a small passage of three to seven verses. Notice who is speaking, who is listening, and what is happening around it.
Study for meaning. Look up the words in their original language. Ask Holy Spirit what it meant to the original audience and what it means for you now.
Apply for transformation. Write one personal “I am” or “I will” statement and live it out.
Repeat this once a day for five days with the same passage. Each time you return to it, you’ll notice something new. As His Word takes root, it will transform the way you think, the way you respond, and the way you face the storms in your life.
Friend, you don’t have to fight your storm on empty.
Make space for stillness.
Stay rooted in His Word.
Keep the conversation going.
When you abide in the Vine, you will find the refreshment you’ve been craving — and the strength you need to walk through any storm that comes your way.
