The Storm Isn’t the Problem—Your Thoughts Are

Have you ever spiraled… even over something small?
Like a comment, a glance, or your daughter apologizing to her friend for your family (your music - who doesn’t love a good will.i.am. song #thatPOWER)?

Yeah. That happened. 🙋‍♀️
And it triggered an old inner storm I thought I’d already calmed…the not good enough mom syndrome.

Ever been in a situation where everything around you felt like it was about to sink—and Jesus was just... napping?

That’s exactly what happened in Mark 4:35–41.

Jesus tells the disciples, “Let’s go to the other side.” But before they even get halfway, a violent storm hits. Waves are crashing into the boat, it’s filling with water, and Jesus is in the back—asleep on a cushion.

The disciples panic and shout, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re dying?!”

Jesus wakes up, speaks to the wind and the waves, and everything goes calm. Then He turns to them and says, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

Oof.

But here’s what this taught me:
Most of the storms we think we’re battling out there?
They’re actually happening right here—between our ears.

And, the battle in your brain has to be won first.
Here’s why…

1. Faith is Listening Until You're Persuaded

Romans 10:17 says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”

But the Greek word for “hearing” here? It means hearing in a way that births faith inside you.

Faith isn’t about striving. It’s about being persuaded by Father.
Persuaded He’s with you. Persuaded He and His Word is trustworthy. Persuaded it’s already handled.

That kind of faith doesn’t come by accident—it comes by listening, again and again, until you're convinced.

And not just casually listening but posturing yourself in a way that you allow Father to birth His faith in you.

2. Outer Storms Expose Inner Storms

When my daughter started apologizing for our family, it exposed some deep insecurity in me.

The disciples did the same thing. When the storm hit, they panicked and said, “Don’t you care if we die?”

Their fear wasn't about the wind. It was about their belief that Jesus didn’t care.

Storms reveal what you really believe.

And your brain? It doesn’t know the difference between actual danger and emotional drama.

So if you don’t interrupt the loop, the loop becomes your identity.

3. Inner Authority Comes Before Outer Victory

Jesus gave the disciples authority—then questioned why they didn’t use it.

He said, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
Why did Jesus ask this?

Of course they’d be afraid of the storm that might kill them?

Seem insensitive, right?
Jesus got on to them because they had what they needed to calm the storm themselves. They just didn’t believe it…yet.

You can’t exercise spiritual authority externally if you’re not walking in it internally.

You are seated with Christ. You have the authority.
But authority flows from faith…not fear.

Courageous Action

  1. Name the Outer Storm – What’s the current thing you’re facing?

  2. Identify the Inner Storm – What thoughts/emotions is it triggering?

  3. Ask for the Promise – What has Father already said about this?

  4. Build Your Faith – For the next 7 days, sit with one scripture promise:

    • Write it down.

    • Read it aloud.

    • Sit with it 3–5 minutes.

    • Ask, “Father, what do You want me to know about this?”

When you change the storm in your mind, you begin to change the storm in your life.

You’ve got this—and Father’s got you.
