The Art of Letting Go: How God Grows Your Capacity by Making Space

When I heard the words, “We’re letting you go,” my heart sank.

Sixteen years poured into that job—sleepless nights, sweat, tears, and even a shiny new title. Cue sad face emoji here.

Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

In my mind, I’d lost everything. But what Father was really doing was straightening my path toward the work I now get to do.

That’s the paradox of surrender.

Letting go always stirs fear because the brain interprets it like pain. Jesus felt that in the Garden when He prayed,

“Father… not My will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42).

Surrender isn’t weakness—it’s alignment. If Jesus trusted Father’s will in His darkest hour, then our little “letting goes” are safe in His hands too.

So how do we live this out in our everyday lives and businesses? I’ve learned there are three shifts that make letting go not just possible, but powerful.

1. Let Go of the Drains

Drains are the things—and sometimes the people—that pull more out of you than they give back. The friend who only calls to unload. The client who always pushes boundaries. The clutter on your desk that whispers, “deal with me,” every time you sit down to work.

Hebrews 12:1 urges us to “throw off everything that weighs us down… and let us run with endurance the race set before us.”

I think about blackberry bushes behind my childhood home. Every time I tried to pull free from one thorny branch, another snagged me.

That’s exactly what drains do.

Drains entangle us and keep us from running freely into the next season.

Take 15 minutes this week and ask yourself:

  • What’s draining me right now?

  • What’s stealing my energy and joy?

  • Write it down.

That’s the start of letting go.

2. Let Go of the Good for Greater

Sometimes the hardest thing to release isn’t the obvious drain—it’s something that still looks good. A program that still sells. A partnership that once felt right. A habit that used to help.

John 15:2 reminds us, “Every branch that bears fruit, He prunes so that it may bear more fruit.”

Pruning hurts because the branch is alive. Yet pruning is exactly what makes room for more and better fruit.

David understood this in the cave with Saul. He had the chance to shortcut his way to the throne, but he released the “good” opportunity and waited for God’s timing. That’s what cleared the way for him to be crowned as king by Father’s hand, not his own.

Once you’ve named your drains, also look at the “good” things you’re clinging to:

  • Ask: What’s no longer for this season?

  • What needs pruning so Father can grow something greater?

  • Then pray: Father, I release this into Your hands. I trust You to make space for greater.

3. Practice the Art of Letting Go

Letting go isn’t a one-time dramatic act. It’s a rhythm. It’s keeping your hands open so Father can place the greater in them.

1 Peter 5:7 says, “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

We’re not releasing into thin air—we’re releasing into Father’s capable hands.

Think of Everest climbers. The higher they go, the more every ounce matters. They constantly review their packs—deciding what stays and what goes. That’s how they survive. We need that same rhythm.

So here’s your courageous action this week:

  • Review it. Set aside 15 minutes. Ask: What drained me? What energized me? What was only good? What could be greater? Write it down.

  • Release it. Pray: Father, I give You these drains and even the good things I’ve been holding tightly. I trust You to make space for the greater You have for me.

  • Realign it. Take one action. Cancel the draining coffee date. Retire the offer that no longer fits. Let go of the client who isn’t aligned with your calling. Clear the clutter that steals your focus. The action itself is the art of letting go.

Letting go isn’t losing. It’s how Father makes room for His strength, His strategy, and His greater glory in your life and business.
