Have you ever tried to do something new but found yourself returning to what you know?
Do you work on being consistent, yet you can only say you’re consistent at being inconsistent?
What’s stopping you?
No, really. What’s stopping you? Let’s get to the root so you can do that in your heart.
Today is for you if…
• If you’re tired of not living the life you know you’re meant for.
• If you desire to keep growing beyond what you’ve thought possible in the past.
• If you’re ready to fly out of your cage into a bigger, brighter future.
I’ve been talking to you about living a life of consistency and how this helps you get what you want. Yesterday, I shared that sometimes you need to DSD – do something different – when you’re not getting the results you’re looking for.
But trying something new can be scary. Fear creeps in and stops you.
Sometimes that fear is so sneaky you don’t even realize what it’s doing.
It might show up as procrastination, business, or even other good things that pop up.
But what’s really stopping you? What’s the real fear?
Here one of my favorite tools to start working on your fears so you can get you moving again.
Discover the Root Fear
What’s the real fear? Use the Levels of Why tool to discover the root.
Keep asking Why until you get a gut or emotional reaction.
This helps indicate if you hit the root.
It’s like when the dentist hits the root, and the pain radiates through your body.
My personal example of the Levels of Why:
I’m writing a book right now. It’s a DSD. It’s something new I’m doing.
But it scares me!!
Why does writing a book scare me?
It’s new, and doing new things scares me.
I worry that what I say doesn’t matter as much as some big name.
Why does doing new things scare me?
I’m unsure what I’m doing, and it might fail or not be what people are hoping for.
It would just confirm my feeling that my voice doesn’t matter.
Why does failing or not knowing what people are hoping for scare me?
If I fail, I’m failing other people if they don’t find value in it.
Why does failing other people scare me?
I’m not too fond of confrontation with people. It feels like conflict. I like keeping the peace.
And, if they don’t find value in it, I fear they don’t think I’m valuable.
Why don’t I like conflict?
I fear that conflict equals disconnection from people.
Why do I fear disconnection?
My biggest fear is disconnection from others. I’m all about connection. That makes me feel like I’m in harmony and at peace. It makes me feel like I matter.
Now it’s your turn…use the levels of why to discover your root fear. Pick a topic and keep asking why until you get that gut or emotional reaction.
Tomorrow we'll work through what we need to do next with this root fear so we can keep moving forward.
